M10 Tank Destroyer
1st Armored Div.,
601st Tank Destroyer Battalion
Italy,  May 1944
The US M10 was the most produced US tank destroyer of WWII. The British M10s were
called Achilles IIC because of the modification of the main gun from a 3 inch gun to a
quick-firing British 17 Pounder. The conversions took place at the Royal Arsenal at
Woolwich. The Mk. IC had a diesel engine while the Mk. IIC had a gasoline engine. Even
the gun of the Mk. IIC was having difficulty against the heavy armor of the German
Panthers and Tigers. Gradually the M36 Jackson with its heavier armor began to take
over from the M10 and Achilles.

The first U.S. Army armored division to see battle in WW II was the 1st Armored Division
nicknamed “Old Ironsides”.  In May of 1943 at the end of the North Africa campaign they
converted to M10. Next the 1st AD took part in the invasion of Salerno Italy in September
1943 and were involved in the attack on the infamous Winter Line in November of 1943.
Old Ironsides was used to support Allied forces at Anzio and flanked the Axis forces. They
were part of the liberating forces that entered Rome on June 4, 1944.
