In response to the Douglas DC-4 Lockheed developed the Constellation. As more powerful
resulting in the L-1049G Super Constellation. The development of the L-1049G improved range
with the addition of wing-tip tanks. The more powerful engines made it necessary to use large
propellers that required the aircraft to sit quite high off the ground. A triple tail was developed
because the size of a single tail would have been too large to fit in any hangar.

On September 28, 1954 Lockheed L-1049D Super Constellation c/n 4166 was delivered to
Seaboard & Western Airlines as “N6504C” “Frankfurt Airtrader”. Later the aircraft was converted
to an L-1049H and due to a shortage of British built aircraft BOAC leased N6504C from March
1955 until February 1956. During the lease the aircraft wore the BOAC paint scheme but retained
the N6504C registration. The aircraft traded hands several times with the last owner being North
American Aircraft Trading and registered as 5T-TAC. In 1968 while being used in the Biafra Airlift
the aircraft was destroyed in Nigeria.
