In response to the Douglas DC-4 Lockheed developed the Constellation. As more powerful
engines were developed the Constellation was stretched 21 feet and improvements made
resulting in the L-1049G Super Constellation. The development of the L-1049G improved
range with the addition of wing-tip tanks. The more powerful engines made it necessary to
use large propellers that required the aircraft to sit quite high off the ground. A triple tail was
developed because the size of a single tail would have been too large to fit in any hangar.

Between March 1955 and August 1956 Lufthansa took delivery of eight L-1049G
Constellations. D-ALOF was c/n 4642 and flew for Lufthansa from July 25, 1956 until
October 6, 1967. On December 8, 1967 the aircraft was sold to the North American Aircraft
Trading Corp. as 5T-TAG. On July 1, 1968 the aircraft was on approach during a storm to
the Uli Airstrip in Nigeria when it landed short. The crash killed the 3 occupants and
destroyed 10.5 tons of International Red Cross medical supplies destined for Biafra.
