In April 1958 the Fairchild F.27 flew and in November 1958 the first Fokker produced F.27-
100 was delivered to Aer Lingus. In November 1967 the F.27-500 (FH.227 in the U.S.) first
flew. The 500 was a stretched version and the most numerous with 123 being produced.
When production ended in 1987 there were 586 Fokker and 207 Fairchild aircraft built.

In October 1964 Ansett-ANA ordered Fokker F-27 c/n 10280 that would be delivered as PH-
FGX on August 17 1965. The aircraft would go on to become the property of two other
airlines before coming to Northwest Airlink (operated by Mesaba Airlines) as N278MA on
May 15 1990 where it operated until May 15 1995. F-27s were first used by the airline in
1988 but by 1991 the first of 25 De Havilland Dash 8 replacements were arriving. N278MA
was last operated by Eagle Jet Charter Inc and in 2006 was used for parts. The aircraft had
flown 61,585 hours and 63,535 cycles.
